Subject: Re: Buying new 2001 9-5

Dave, I can give you my experience. I bought a 2001 9-5 on Sept 26, 2001. The sticker price was $38,810 and my purchase price was $28,700. I think that is about as good a price as you can get. The 2002 models did not arrive in the showroom until late November. Saab is always very late in making the current year model available. Not a big deal but it's different than many other car makers. If your dealer still has 2001 models available, he should be willing to deal to make room for more 2002's. However, you need a different approach. Do not ask your dealer what price he wants you to pay for the car. Tell him what price you will pay him to take it off his hands. You should be able to get a 2001 for atleast $10K off sticker in order to insulate yourself from the high depreciation that Saab's experience after the first three years. If you can't get a significant discount off list then I would suggest you look for an Aeor coming off lease or wait until the fall (when Saab traditionally has huge incentives) and go for a 2002 model. For the roughly $1,500 difference, I prefer the 4 cyl over the 6cyl even though the 6 cyl is a little smoother during acceleration. Good luck with your search. A couple of questions: First, > what is the model year cycle for the 9-5? Second, while I'd really > like an Aero, color and cost may limit me to an SE with the V-6. > Isn't the V-6 a GM design, rather than a Saab design? A GM turbo > makes me nervous. Has the V-6 been as reliable as the 2.3? Finally, > how does one determine a fair price for a new 2001?
