I had to use the car that evening, and although the revs were somewhat erratic, it behaved pretty much as normal. I say 'pretty much', but there did seem to be something intangible that didn't seem quite right. The following morning on the way to work, I had a problem getting into fifth gear on one occasion, and then at the next traffic lights, I was unable to engage first or second gears. Luckily I was close to my place of work, and needed only two careful third-gear starts to get off the road. The vehicle was recovered to my local Saab dealer, and I was hopeful that this was a simple linkeage failure. However, I was informed a short time afterwards that the speedometer drive had failed, and part of the drive had fallen into the gearbox, jamming the gear selection mechanism. The erratic engine revs were caused by the interaction between the speedometer and the engine management system. My dealers are currently estimating a cost of £800 to remove and open the gearbox, remove the failed speedometer drive and replace as necessary, and then reassemble. Although the car is covered by a third-party warranty, I do not know at present whether they will cover this repair - though I will certainly be lodging a claim. Whether they do or not, I will also be contacting Saab Customer Services. I notice that the Haynes manual warns of the danger of dropping the drive into the gearbox when dismantling the drive, though this scenario may well be different to that encountered by mechanical failure. To be honest, I am very surprised and disappointed to find myself potentially facing a huge bill for such a simple component failure. Of course any mechanism can be wrecked by the failure of a simple component, and I could understand perhaps if the car was a new model, but my car is a 1996 (1997 model year) car, and I would have thought the 9000 had been around long enough for such a design inadequacy to have been identified and resolved. Anyone else know of this problem??
