If purchase cost, gas mileage and room are the criteria - think outside the box! Keep the 'blasted' minivan for the room and get yourself an older Saab as an 'economical' commuter car. Saabs do not hold their resale value, which is a plus if you are the buyer. If you must go on a trip with five people, you have the minivan. To save gas on your 50 mile commute - use the Saab. This logic works with my wife, I have a '90 900S and a Sienna minivan. The Sienna sucks gas at 17 mpg combined mileage, while the Saab get 29 mpg combined. I got the 900S for $3,000.
