I would look for a vacuum leak first. Check all the vacuum hoses, turbo tubes and rubber connectors. It is a 10 yr old car, replace the intake manifold grommets (3 - they are cheap from the dealer, even) if they are swollen or hard. 160k and it probably has the original hoses. I would replace them with 3.5mm silicone hose (in teh US: hose techniques.com I am sure that it can be had in the UK as well). If the problem subsides, you found it. If not, a further check of the air mass meter and oxygen sensor will be required. Let us know.
