The 1986 900s had the parking/emergency brakes on the front wheels. The Owner's Manual recommended pulling up slightly on the brake lever while starting out when it was slippery. This created a limited slip effect. The parking brake moved to the rear wheels in 1987. The other recommendation was to use good dedicated winter tires. If you have a manual you could always start in 2nd or use the Winter mode with the automatic. How well do studded tires or chains work in Alaska? I am assuming you can use them. I worked with a programmer from Alaska and he talked about driving on the ice with four studded tires on his four wheel drive.
