Subject: 9-5 Fuel Guage misbehaving

Hi, I've gotten help here before so here I go again! The fuel gauge on my (1998) 9-5 has been behaving erratically lately. When I start the car in the morning, it reads empty, even though I might have say a half tank. As I drive the 15miles/24km to work, it slowly rises to the correct position. Nine times out of ten if I stop the car and start again, it will immediately go to the correct position, although there are occasions where the whole process starts again. Yesterday however, while driving, it suddenly dropped to empty (which was a surprise) and then started it's climbing trick again. This is worrying me because on a previous car of mine (a Peugeot) similar behaviour resulted in me having to get a fuel tank replaced. This was expensive! Since then I am careful never to overfill, or indeed let my fuel level drop too low. So what are folks bets on the following? Electrical problem with grounding etc - no other instruments, lights etc seem to be showing problems (apart from the usual low life of headlight bulbs). Some problem with the float getting stuck in the fuel sender - is there some sort of build up of pressure that would cause a stuck float to release after a while? Or is there some other evil at work? Many thanks for any insights... John
