The "real" BMWs are the nimble and sporty smaller coupes and sedans. The cars that put BMW on the map (especially in the US) were the 1600 and 2002 models which eventually morphed into what is now the 3 series. The big land barge 7 series is the status symbol car preferred by those who really don't enjoy driving all that much. The 8 series, which was only made for a few years in the early 90's, was an awesome exotic sport coupe, but does not represent what the BMW marque is about. By the way, it is entirely possible to enjoy *both* SAABs and BMWs as they each have their own unique characters. I would not classify either of them as true "luxury cars" in the American sense. I know you were just kidding, but I often see this sort of cross-brand animosity from both sides and don't really understand it...
