Subject: Convertible top motor replacement?

Hello folk: The top on my 1992 900 TC has begun to rise more and more slowly. Further, when putting the top down, it takes a full 5 or 6 seconds of running the piston motor before it engages and begins to move. And then I need to give a good physical boost before it falls back and down. My mechanic claims that he's never heard of a vacuum pump motor for a convertible top going bad before and maybe there's something wrong with the pistons themselves. But the hydraulic fluid is full -- no leaks -- and all else seems fine. Replacement is going to be very expensive, at least labor-wise. I don't think I can bleed the system without taking the entire thing out of the car. Has anyone had any similar experience with the vacuum pump system on the convertible? Any suggestions to offer? jdk
