Simon, These things pull off and push back on very easily. I take all my plastic side trim off once a year to clean underneath. It gets very dirty. Takes just a moment. Best thing for you to do is prise off the corresponding piece in the other side. You will see exactly how it works. Takes just a moment. For the record, the car body has a row of holes with (female) nylon liners. The plastic trim has a set of (male) nylon buttons which are 'free' to slide in a channel which is shaped into the metal backplate. The male and female halves form a 'press-stud'. It sounds like your male halves may have sprung from the metal channel rather than popped out from the female halves. You need to pull these out (maybe with pliers) and slide them back in the channel (with a little grease for lubrication). Get the alignment right and push into place with a slap of the hand. You may need to bend the trim straight before fitting - it's easily bent in an accident. Best of luck. Let me know how you get on.
