Definitely... sorry for the confusion. Invoice is the price the dealer pays for the car, but just because you get the car at invoice, this does not mean you bought the car and the dealer made no money. You can find the invoice price by doing a simple web search at edmunds.com, carpoint.com, etc. The invoice price is not the actual dealer cost because it doesn't factor in such hidden items such as rebates, manufacturer holdbacks, and dealer incentives. A dealer can sell you a car at their invoice price, and still make $200-1,500 or more for the sale. How? First, beware of small print that says "all rebates go to dealer". Means exactly what it says. Dealer sells you the car at invoice, and pockets your $1,000 manufacturer rebate. Second, all manufacturers give dealers a "holdback" of anywhere between 2-6%. Pure and simple, cash to the dealer for selling a vehicle. You buy a car at invoice, dealer get 2-6% from the manufacturer. Third, incentives. Especially popular during the end of the model year. You can find these at Edmunds.com as well, but many folks forget about these. Dealers can get anywhere between $250-3,000 from a manufacturer for getting rid of a car. You buy a car at invoice, dealer pockets the cash. So forget everything the dealer tells you about stealing food from his children if you buy a car at invoice. I'll usually start at invoice plus 3%, and if the dealer won't budge, I'll factor in the true dealer cost. That's when they really know you did your homework. At this point some dealers may get pissed - they see this as you reaching into their pocket (imagine!), but most honest dealers will recognize that you know the game and are being more fair, done deal :-) X "Michael Gilman" <newsSPAMAWAYnopsamtintime.net> wrote in message news:B926E88E.1E36B%newsSPAMAWAYnopsamtintime.net... > Can you clarify what you mean by COST vs. invoice? > > Thanks! >
