Subject: Re: Good years and models?

I'd look for the latest year you can afford in a 9-3SE, while avoiding 1999 if possible. I read the 9-3 board at http://www.saabnet.com religiously and 1999's seem to have more minor glitches than the later years of the 9-3, and it was the first year for the 9-3, though many will argue it's basically the same car as the 1998 900. However Saab did proclaim the number of changes to the '99 9-3 which mostly seem related to some of the gadgetry rather than engine components. Buying one of these cars new wasn't that much of a problem given the warranty, but buying one used with little or no warranty could be expensive - this is just my second-hand opinion based on my reading. My suggestion for the SE trim is that given the depreciation on these cars (frightening), the SE package will cost you very little over a base 9-3, and has some really nice upgrades, including the 205HP HOT engine rather than the 185HP engine - either is a blast though - my '98 900 had the 185HP engine and made me fall in love with the turbo rush of Saabs. In addition, while it probably won't make much difference to you, the SE will most likely hold its value longer than the base 9-3. Make sure you get full service records and perhaps CarFax searches on the VIN when you find one you like, and obviously visit Edmunds or CarPoint to make sure you know the fair price. It should be a buyer's market for someone in your position. Hope this helps.
