Subject: Re: FILL COOLANT FLUID

Green 'can' be mixed with amber (merc) and blue (saab) as they are similar base chemistry, but not with pink/orange (dexcool) as it is a completely different chemistry and vice versa. If it were my car, I would not mix at all, but flush and fill with Mercedes coolant period. It is proven and is pretty cheap insurance. It may be too late for every Saab out there with an H motor, but, at least after the head gasket is replaced, it will not happen again with regular coolant replacement (2-3 yr). Saab head gasket failure is due to poor corrosion inhibitors in green coolant. There is a steel former embedded in the head gasket sandwich. When it rusts through, the gasket can 'bulge' near a coolant passage (usually between #1 and the chain cavity) Once it bulges, it is in need of replacing. The corrosion is 'enhanced' by coolant with bad chemistry for the combination of iron and aluminum (in most all current engines). Basically, when the gasket is soaked with coolant, the steel former in the middle between an aluminum and iron electrodes, the rusting of the steel former is accelerated. In addition, this process can chemically etch the block or head, though the head is usually 'worn' by the seal ring as the gasket looses strength and allows movement here. Merc coolant (G05) is a 'good thing' (tm) for any car with Aluminum and iron in the cooling system.
