My 93 Nov 2001 SE now with about 12000 miles averages about 45Mpg (imp), I have found that there seems to be "funny" with the fuel consumption at 70 - it seems to be worse than at 68 or 72 - probably a duff node in the emu data or ERG etc; my '99 93 was the same! Using cruise control at 68 I can get 49mpg - better or worse depending on the head wind (-7mpg for driving into a gale). Hard acceleration and breaking drink the fuel - but you need to know the limits of your car so its allowed sometimes ;-) Oil consumption - minimal - but as with yours my engine was really tight from new so you may be lucky if you treat it right, (don't ask what right is as everyone will have their own ideas) One day I may get around to putting the stats for the mpg on the web.
