Subject: Turbo Boost Problem

A month ago I suddenly lost all turbo boost in my 1998 9000 CSE. Upon inspection when the engine cooled I found that the rod from the control diaphram had come off the waste gate lever. It looked like it was once held in place by a cotter pin but if there was a hole in the lever it is no filled in with the rusted remains of cotter pin. Because of the location there seems to be no way of driving or drilling out the pin without removing the turbo unit. I jury rigged a fix with part of a brass ring with springy points that was designed to hold snaps on fabric or leather. That lasted about 700 miles. Of course when it came off I was 150 miles from home in the hills of Western Maryland. It was embarassing to have to climb hills at 55 mph in thrid gear with a CSE. I am on my thrid homemade clip now and I have become proficient assembling the things entirely by feel while lying over the engine. Has anybody else come up with a better fix? I really don't want to remove the turbo unit just to insert a cotter pin. ----for want of a nail.
