Subject: Brand new rear brakes: are smoking pads normal?

I just had new rear brakes installed on my SAAB 1993 900S by a local repair station, as part of a state inspection. Normally I take the car out of state to a SAAB specialist but could not get there this time. After a *leisurely* 15-minute drive averaging 35mph without any abrupt stops, the rear brake pads are smoking and stinking. Is this normal with brand new brakes? One additional fact: after the installation, the emergency brake is very easy to pull up to its fully engaged position, whereas before it went only about halfway up; when fully engaged now it does not stop the car from rolling. Did the station botch the job? Thanks in advance. Tim Romano
