I just finished the same job today. I successfully removed the retaining ring with two big screwdrivers. And I mean big things. What you do is to place each screwdriver at opposite fins and let the tools form a "cross". You can adjust where you like the screwdrivers to make contact to optimize the force on the ring. You will know feel that you can bring a good force on the ring and easely get it removed. Good luck! Leif from Sweden PS. what I also heard when I bought the new (and very expensive) fuel pump is to never let the fuel level go below half filled tank and the pump will survive longer due to better cooling.
