Intense maintenance? Find me a car with a cam-belt engine whose manufacturer _doesn't_ specify a finite amount of time before the cam-belt needs to be changed... A delayed car service I can understand, but you mention a "missed" service which suggests that his car ran for 35k miles without any form of service. If I am mistaken then I apologise, but if this is the case, then I'm afraid he deserves the repair bill.
