>Timing belts are a known problem in *all* engines using a timing belt, >not only the GM V6 engine used by Saab due to requirements in the US >market A few years ago I had a Honda Accord. The belt broke at 120K miles and my total cost to have it replaced was $200. I drove the car until it had 250K miles then sold it. That's what I call a good engine design. The "known" problem I was referring to is that the 1994 and 1995 V6 engines had extremely high wear (or poor design) on the timing belt and since these are interference engines, if the timing belt breaks the engines is junk. Saab realized they had a problem and they pay for the first three belt changes at 35K/65K/95K miles. I saw a post from a guy who had the timing belt fail at 10,000 miles and trash the engine (and Saab payed for the replacement). What is so frustrating for my friend is that Saab has a great reputation for high mileage cars. The car itself is beautiful and I can see why he bought it. He had it at the dealers for repair, and apparently they get service bulletins on this V6 engine often, why they didn't alert him to the fact that the belt needed to be replaced is one big question. He didn't cut corners on the service, it had been to the dealership on several occasions including the 35K mileage check when the belt was changed the first time. I checked the blue book value at Kelleys' on this car and it is $3,000. Seems low for a 7 year old car that originally sold for $40,000. When I started looking around for a used engine, someone told me that it would be almost impossible to find one because many other owners had the same problem and all of the used engines have been bought as replacements.
