Subject: Changing Transmission Drivers on 86 900 T?

I have decided to fix my 86 900 T 16V w/5-speed with bad drivers. Mile Hi Auto Body wanted $1,100 to fix it, but I have found used parts for $125 (incl shipping) and a mechanic to help me if I need it. I have taken apart several 95's, 96's and 97's, I have worked extensively on these cars, but have never worked on the drive train on the 900's. If I fix it, at least I can sell it and get some money out of it. Or drive it another couple of years or until I find a suitable 9000. Question is, can I just disconnect the lower ball joint and swing the wheel out far enough to replace the driver on the transmission and the 3-way bearing on the end of the axle or do I have to dismantle the entire wheel, taking off the brake caliper, rotor, etc. as the Bentley Manual suggests? Thanks for advice, Charles.
