Not in my exprience - I've had a fair few 900s and 9000s with well over 150k on the original chain, with no visible wear. I know of many with over 250k on the original chain. If the engine was really out, then I'd agree - you may as well change the chain. But why was the engine out for a head gasket job? > I know what you mean about the shape though.
