I think the answer to this is simple-take a look at the cars on the road from 1986-1992 and note them for condition then start whitling away manufacturers-Saab,BMW,VW(Audi maybe)Volvo,Mercedes-maybe one or two others .If you're lucky enough to find a Saab 900 in great condition, low mileage etc then snap it up,'cos the next buyer after you will take it.You may find the car will do 300k,not uncommon,Yes they're pretty rust resistant-check for rust if you can-you won't find much-look around the boot/trunk frame(this was a weak point)other than that just the usual checks. I drive a 900 16v Turbo-1986-recently when in for service the garage had 3 buyers turned away requesting the price of my car(they also sell used Saab's) between 9-12 on the Saturday morning I went to collect the car, later that night, fuelling up,I had a motorist request my phone number should I ever want to sell.......................I just drove to South of France from NW UK(3000miles in all)-not a single issue-recommended.I'm not so sure about the newer models(now GM own Saab) but the pre 1998 cars are all about build quality.
