> You didn't mention this, but i assume the vibration is independent of the > engine RPM, i.e. independent of the gear? This problem is more prevalent in 5th gear - the shuddering is *much* worse. I usually try to ride through it when pulling onto motorways in 4th (revs exceeding 3000 RPM and turbo dropping off). If I go through it in 5th, the revs are usually around 2500 RPM and the turbo spinning full-on. If I try to accelerate slowly through this speed bracket without turbo, but in 5th, the problem is not so pronounced. I've just done a 400 mile trip up and down the country and had the OSF wheel off after about 250 miles to remove a small stone from the brakes. The problem was less pronounced coming back - go figure? A pal I was visiting thinks it might be a bent/unbalanced drive shaft or some crash damage to the front wheel. When I bought the car, the OSF tyre was of a different make to the other three (and a cheap one at that), but I am unable to confirm or prove the previous owner ??stoved it into the kerb?? Several mechanics have looked at the front wheels for various reasons - new brakes, swapping front to rear wheels, drive shaft replacement (NSF), etc - and none have commented on the state of the OSF. Is there some test, or specialist kit, that can check ??something?? Tracking, balancing and alignment tests have not shown anything odd, which is where I would expect the problem to become apparent.
