Subject: firewall boot/grommet for shift rod

I have a 1984 900T 8valve that was originally an automatic and has been converted to a 1989 manual 5 speed non-turbo transmission. Whomever performed the swap before I purchased this car left in place a badly damaged firewall boot/grommet at the location where the gear selector rod goes through. I took me awhile to discover this is why there was a lot of warm air coming into the footwell area and why the keys were always warm--sometimes even hot--to the touch when I went to turn the engine off. How hard would this part be to replace? Can someone suggest a procedure for this operation? Is this part any different between the auto and manual transmissions from the 1984 to 1992 900 models? Thank you for your helpful suggestions. Tony
