Subject: Warning about sticking ignition switches in some models

Because of the placement of the ignition switch on the console between the seats, the switch is more prone to collect debris which can cause the mechanics of the switch to get hung up in the start position. Symptoms will be that the Parking & Main brake lights will remain on after the engine has been started (you may think that maybe it's just the brake fluid that is low) & you may hear a whine (if your car stereo is on you may not hear the whine) because the starter motor is engaged & spinning with the flexwheel (some call it a flywheel). I've talked to a person who runs a Saab Site & I've also done some Google search & this turns out to be sort of a common problem. One person recommended that once a month the ignition switch be cleaned with Carb cleaner (but over-spray could damage the interior. especially plastic) or even just plain water (but I disagree with using just regular water because of mineral deposit build-up & potential rusting). If a few drops of water are to be used then use distilled water to do the initial clean up of the switch. Then after the water I would recommend putting in a few drops of isopropyl alcohol to absorb any moisture. Then, follow that up with a few drops of a thin oil to help lubricate it. Once a month is probably over doing it for most but if you travel on alot of dirt roads then it might be appropriate for you to clean it that often. I post this warning because last night my ignition switch was stuck partially in the 'on' position (when I saw that both brake lights were on I thought that the fluid levels were low & I did not hear the whine because my radio was on) which caused my starter to overheat & start on fire. Thankfully I caught the fire in time while it was still very small & amazingly I was able to blow it out. So tomorrow instead of looking for another Saab I will only have to look for another starter! Hope this will help someone in the future. Mark
