Subject: Re: Saab 9-3 Modding & Customization Website

I'll post a copy of our correspondence. Basically, I posted a message about my website, and the rules said that you must put a link back to Saabnet.com if you post a link to your own page. I didnt read that the first time and didnt have a link back. Then, I got the idea to do what other people had done and I posted a message giving a description of my site saying that if people were interested i would send them the link. Apparently the webmaster of Saabnet.com didnt like this either so he banned my IP. I can still get in because I have access to many other IPs on many other domains, and I have 3 other IPs I can choose from at home too. I sent him an email about it anyway: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- MESSAGE ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi, I guess my recent attempt to let members know about my website isnt OK in your books either. The reason I set up my site in the first place is because your message board software is very poor and there are many other free alternatives (such as phpBB) that can do the job better. The poor BB software makes it difficult to find the information I am interested in. I used phpBB on my site because it is extremely powerful but I have written bulletin board software myself that is easier to navigate manage etc.... I want a saab website that looks good and provides services that are easy to use and flexible. Right now saabnet does not have that. It seems that you are just interested in protecting your website which is understandable, but you are better off being open to outside forces. I am willing to help you make saab net a better website. I will offer my services for free because I want saab net to be the place that I can go to get all the info I need. Please dont be so hard on the people that make up your community. It will not work in your favor in the long run. A better way to have gone about this would have been to contact me first to see how we could work together instead of advertising/spamming the Saabnet.com boards. I don't pretend that Saabnet.com is for all Saab owners. It definitely does not appeal to some folks. I'm very anti-spam/anti-email harvesting and am especially discouraged when I see other Saabers doing it. I'm sorry you've lost access to the site, but I have a zero tolerance policy on spam. -Scott ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MY RESPONSE TO Saabnet.com'S RESPONSE TO MESSAGE ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Well, I am sorry I didnt contact you first. I am also very anti-spam/anti-email harvesting. I encourage you to check out the bulletin board software on my website http://saab.pintmaster.com. It prevents non-users gaining access to the email addresses of users and you can configure it to only allow sending emails through the site so even users dont see the email address of the person they are sending an email to until that person responds. Also, blocking my ip or my domain wont prevent me gaining access to the site. I am not going to go on and cause trouble, but I do use the site because I find it helpful. It is a minor inconvenience. There are numerous ways around blocking it which I can go into detail if you like. I am not wanting to seek vengeance on you now that you banned my ip. I appreciate your frustration with people abusing the site. The checks and balances to prevent that sort of activity can be built into the code very easily to protect your users. It appears your experience with maintaining a large site is minimal and the only way you know how to deal with it is by banning people. It doesnt have to be like that. -Colin
