Gwil, You can get chips in windscreens repaired. Try Autoglass - I had a couple of chips repaired by them and I was very happy with the work. It was not expensive - a lot cheaper than buying another car. I think the repairs are also free if you are with the AA. Get your friends car and strip it of all useful bits.
