Most CDs do not take well to washing. There may : seem to be no damage; but damp which gets between the layers of : plastic can corrode the metallisation. This IIRC is what kills : many CDs eventually. In a properly manufactured CD, this shouldn't be possible. Of course, given current manufacturing standards in most things... :> A simple soap and water cleanup can often do wonders. Dry with :> a soft towel. Let them air dry completely before reinserting in :> the changer. : : I am trying not to cringe at the thought. Honest, boss. : : Gentlest way to clean a CD, AFAIK, is to breath on the silvered : surface, so as to "fog" it. Then wipe the disk RADIALLY (ie, out : from centre to periphery) with a soft clean lintless fabric (eg, : soft kitchen towel). Repeat as necessary. Allow surface to air- : dry. (If the disk is greasy, of course, you may need to _dampen_ : the fabric with our old friend isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol).) As a side note to this, be advised that CD-R media is much more fragile than a regular pressed CD. The top layer of a CD-R disk is equivalent to the middle layer of a pressed CD, so if you damage the top of a CD-R *at all*, you will probably have a coaster. This is why a lot of people are afraid to use some types of markers to label recordables. -- agreenbu Return to Main Index
