I improved the radio reception quite a bit by simply replacing the antenna mast. A continuity test with an ohmmeter showed that there was no electrical connection between several of the adjacent sections of the mast. Once I changed the mast, there was continuity from the tip of the mast to the center pin of the antenna connector that goes into the radio. Amazingly enough, I was able to order the replacement mast from Radio Shack for about $5 (silver only) by asking for part number RSU 10538296. It seems that Radio Shack sold a Harada power antenna very similar to the one used by Saab.
