Subject: Re: Saab 9000 LPT, 1993 model, boost

Is this a 2.0l or 2.3l? In '93 the 2.0l would have had Bosch fuel injection and separate SAAB developed APC box. The 2.3l would have had the Trionic combined unit (Fuel, ignition and boost control). Saab developed their APC (automatic performance control) to manage boost pressure and allow the car to use a wide range of fuel octane ratings without any other adjustments. Yes there is overboost fuel cut-off, boost control is a closed loop system. MBCs circumvent the APC system plus there is a good chance of running lean if the fuel map doesn't cater for higher boost pressures. Some lpts have the full APC and some just loop the boost pressure to the wastegate actuator and set a low boost pressure of around 0.45 bar by adjusting the length of the control arm. Some (definitely in the UK between '91/92 and '95) 2.0l lpts didn't have an intercooler. The ECU will reduce boost and retard ignition if it detects detonation. The older APC system uses a traditional knock sensor to detect knock. The Trionic system uses the spark plugs as cylinder pressure sensors - see how: http://www.vehicular.isy.liu.se/~larer/Projects/main.html This might be a good place to start if its a Bosch/APC control system: http://www.scotsglen.com/saab/ecu/ If its a Trionic system your out of luck AFAIK. T-5 uses a Motorola 32-bit processor. The tuners reprogram the boost pressure, fuel cut-off, ignition and timing tables. AFAIK they don't change any program code as such. However, I _think_ that for the 2.3l _only_ you can fit an fpt ecu (and BPC valve if not fitted) to make an lpt into an fpt. ECUs can be had from specialist breakers for around 125 UKP. There are many SAAB tuners around and these may be your easiest route: http://www.abbottracing.com/ http://www.trentsaab.co.uk/ http://www.hirsch-performance.ch/index_e.htm http://www.maptun.com/index.html http://www.speedparts.se/eng/e_index.htm http://www.bsrab.se/se/index.html http://www.rica.nl/frames.html http://www.herrn.com/~sqr/prov/index.html The Saabnet performance bbs may be of help: http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/performance/ AndyH '94 9000 CDE B204 chipped and cooled.
