Subject: Re: Wipers - Check Valves do what ???

The check valves ensure that there is a solid line of fluid between the pump and the nozzle. This is so that a) the pump does not have to work very long b) that there is fluid for the duration of the wipe 'cycle' (3-5 swipes) c)so that the hoses do not 'crud up' as the fluid evaporates in the warm environment of the engine bay. Now, are they necessary, probably not. Will the pump last long enough, probably. Will the hoses crud up, probably not. The check valves are about 6.00 each from saabsite.com IIRC. Many people just connect them directly to the nozzles and they work. Now, the check valve for the headlight washers and near the pump on the 9k's and NG900 are necessary. For the headlight washers, if this check valve is removed, you will siphon out all of your fluid after the first squirt. The check valves CAN also be repaired. I have done this to a few of them. I have some thin rubber and I cut it into small circles and replace the old diaphragm. The check valves pop apart with a knife blade. KeithG Bob wrote: > I have a convertible NG900.
