Dave, On my 1995 900S, the electric A.I.R. pump, is mounted near the w/w resevoir. This is an electric pump that pumps air into the exhaust manifold to reduce emissions under certain conditions. The only time I notice my pump running is for 1-2 minutes after starting the engine. It is fairly loud, sounding a little like a fan, and has always behaved this way since new. Could be your A.I.R. pump, (if you have one) is failing. BTW, mine is a 2.3L, non-turbo, 5-speed.
