Subject: Re: Dash lights out - '90 9000T

Could indeed be the dimmer switch as RH suggests. However my '92 9000 2.3 CS suffered intermittent dash illumination failure for about 8 months. It would sometimes come back to life with a sharp slap on the dash top. Not too sure exactly what is was in the end but to cure it I did the following: 1. Removed dashboard "lid". 2. Removed instrument cluster and replaced all lamps (some had blown). 3. Wiggled all connectors to the back of main light switch and Instrument Lighting Rheostat. 4. Reassembly. This fixed it - well 99%. Since then (about 2 years ago) on start up the dash illumination is sometimes reluctant to come on. It normally waits for the engine revs (and hence voltage) to rise, then springs into life for the rest of the journey. I'm pretty sure that this is a voltage level thing. I don't use the car every day, so the battery voltage is more than likely low most of the time. Can't be the Ignition Switch Relay as everything else works, so most likely be the Instrument Lighting Rheostat or the mysterious "Rheostat Electronic Unit" (terms as per Haynes Manual).
