Subject: Re: Alternator problems '92 900

My 86 900 T did that a couple years ago, maybe 212 k miles. It was the brushes not reaching anymore. Regulator is available as separate part but It did not seem possible to replace it with alternator in the car. Getting the alternator out is a real pain. A real chinese puzzle. Getting it back in is the same. I got a rebuilt one from Checker Auto for around $100 US or so. I figured at that mileage, if the brushes were gone, the rest of the alternator wouldn't be far behind. Depends how long you will keep the car and if you can get to the regulator (on the back of the alternator) or not. Be sure the ground wire is in good condition and fix or replace it if it is not. The alternator is insulated from the engine and will not work unless the grounding wire is present and in good shape. Good luck! Charles.
