Subject: A/C Compressor - Engine Load

On my 1996 900S 2.3i I have noticed that the A/C compressor places substantial load on the engine, and I was wondering if it is normal on this model for the compressor to cut in quite so suddenly and produce quite a loud humming sound? Whilst I appreciate that A/C does use a fair bit of engine power, I have never noticed the load being placed on the engine so abrubtly on other cars (including the 9^3). Is it a characteristic of this model or perhaps a warning of impending problems? The system still produces plenty of cold air, but I have no idea how well the system has been maintained by its previous owners. Is it advisable to get the system fully discharged and recharged annually as the dealer recommends (at a cost of 100ukp)? I don't mind spending the cash as long as it's worthwhile preventative maintenance. Many thanks for any advice, Tim.
