Assuming it is not the knob itself, you are probably having the same problem I had. Because the airflow direction knob was very heavy to turn the conenction rod between the knob and the airflow valve broke. My garage replaced the rod and lubricated the airflow valve. Now both knobs turn much smoother. Unfortunately I can't tell you exactly how much time it is going to take (and therfore how difficult it is), but my garage used three hours to fix the heater-rod, replace a broken dashboard bulb and clean the idle-regulator. So can you do it yourself? Probably, because there are no electronics involved, but you will still need the replacement parts, which I guess cannot be bought in every autoshop. What I find incomprehensible is that the NG900 had the same problem. Out of the 15 NG900's and 10 9-3's I saw at a specialised Swedish cars salvage yard, all but 1 or 2 had their heater knobs stripped of because these things break alot. Why didn't Saab improve the heater in the 9-3 so that the broken knob problem was fixed? -- Mager
