Subject: Engine/valve noise? Newbie advice needed!

I've just bought my first Saab: A '99 9-5 SE which is out of warranty. When I bought it, I looked it over and drove it some but didn't think to get out and listen to it. Which leads me to my question: After bringing it home, I noticed that the engine sounds a lot like a fast running sewing machine at idle. Is that normal for the 2.3t? I'm guessing it's lifters which I assume to be of the hydraulic, adjustable type. Otherwise, the car runs strong, and handles well. It's out of warranty, so if I should be taking the noise more seriously, let me know. Also, does anyone know where shop manuals can be purchased? I'm used to performing my own maintenance/light repair, and have learned over the years to use the manuals to avoid costly mistakes. Any help would be appreciated. --
