If it's after about 1984, unleaded should be used. Both turbo and non-turbo are fine with 95 RON. I find that my 1985 900i is actually better with normal unleaded. Checking back through my records ... I keep an eye on the mpg - it helps me to know if there are problems :) 1985 900i - 27 mpg with 95 RON, averaged over 3500 miles between oil changes using Magnatex oil. Using super in the injection for the first tank after the oil change got me 25 mpg. The next tank of 95 RON got me 27 mpg again, for the same kind of urban driving. 1989 900 turbo - 28 mpg with 98 RON super, averaged over 4000 miles between oil changes, again using Magnatex oil. The driving conditions are mostly the same as the 900i, but include a few slightly longer journeys ("weekend" driving) and lots of turbo boosting. I get 32 mpg on longer journeys, cruising at 70-80 for 100+ miles. I find that 95 RON makes little mpg difference, but the boost is not as high and drops off more quickly. > Do the turbos require Optimax? Nope. They'll run fine on 95 RON unleaded. For longer, sustained boost I find that standard supermarket super at 98 RON is the best. Sainsbury's is my usual. If you're UK and "Up North", Morrisons' petrol is Texaco and very nice. Optimax is good for the first fill-up and quite impressive to start with, but I think that (albeit subjectively) the performance drops after that with successive Optimax fill-ups. I've tried Optimax on both 900 turbos that I've owned and will stick with non-Optimax super, thank you. Trying Optimax in a number of cars, only the Fiats have really enjoyed it. I had a 300 mile round-trip in a Siecento running Optimax done for around 15 UKP of petrol. This was a lease car, while my Saab turbo was being checked out by the insurers following an "incident". My old Punto GT just loved Optimax - 130 BHP on a car that weight was just dangerous :) > Do the engines require conversion to unleaded? Not usually :) Are you any nearer finding a Saab, Carl?
