Well, I took the car for a second opinion (a non Saab mechanic but recommended by a friend as "honest"). Anyway, he can't find anything wrong with the compression in cylinder #1 (in fact he repeated the test three times when I told him what the dealer found) and found all 4 cylinders were "good" for compression. Also he found the car starts first time (for him!) and hasn't seen any of the hard start problems that have come in the last week.<grin> he's holding the car overnight to do a cylinder leak test(?) as the final step but thinks that the fault is somewhere else and not headgasket related. Dave, if you're out there what now? recap: on starting, starter motor turns over but engine doesn't fire sometimes starts without any problem! no smoke from the exhaust no oil in coolant or coolant in oil that I can see I'll continue to bore you all with my experiences until this is sorted! cheers, John 1996 9000 CS 2.3 LPT 157,000km
