They're really useful when you actually have some water in the reservoir :) I ran my water supplies down cleaning the windscreen on a long jaunt up the motorway and had to practically close my eyes and pray hard until I got to the next service station. I didn't dare wipe the windscreen without water for fear of making it worse, which it often does. When I pulled into the service station, my headlamps barely lit the back of the car I had parked behind - flicking the wipers gave a better glow, but re-filling the water made it all safe again.
