In 1998 Volkswagen AG bought Rolls-Royce & Bentley Motor Cars at Crewe,
thinking they bought the Rolls-Royce marque. To their surprise it wasn't
like that at all. The Rolls-Royce marque was owned by Rolls-Royce plc
(a different company) who sold the Rolls-Royce marque to BWM.

This means that VAG got the old factory in Crewe and the Bentley marque
and that BMW got the Rolls-Royce marque. BMW then built a new factory
and will soon (2003?) start producing cars under the Rolls-Royce marque.
