Subject: idling problem with 97 Aero

Lately I've been experiencing a situation where my 97 Aero, well warmed up, will almost die at idle. Usual idle seems to be in the 900-1000 rpm range and it drops to around 400-500 before adjusting itself back up. The check engine code refers to a problem with the idle speed. Had it into my local exclusively Saab (but not a dealer) repair shop. Last week they said they just needed to adjust something and that I should be fine. Not long after, the check engine light came back on and the idling problem was back. They now say it's almost certainly the idle motor, a small $250 device that handles all changes in idle speed for the engine. With labor, I'm looking at a $400-500 repair and was just wondering if anyone suspects something else might be going on. Also wondered if there is a reasonable repair or cleaning procedure for the idle motor or if repairing the current unit instead of replacing it might be a foolish short term fix. I trust the fellows in this shop. Thanks.
