I'm a bit of a wrench and did all the usual testing and diagnosed the problem to the aftermarket radio. How wrong I was! The car had a group 26 universal battery, one of those with the posts on the top and a pair of terminals on the side which were capped off with plastic plugs. Seems the side terminals butted against the fenderwell. In normal circumstances all would be well..... Living in Florida, with lots of humidity and wet weather (I assume this is the cause), the positive side terminal somehow built up corrosion against the fenderwell and a draw was established. Just one more area to check out........I replaced my suspect battery with one from AutoZone for $40 (no side terminals), problems solved. that was about a year ago and all is well....
