Salutations: I always thought that most of the pwobs you describe (except for the pump) could be put down to something I liked to call LVT (Lucas Variable Timing).. It was so unfortunate that they released this fantastically advanced development without bothering to inform the carburetor or valve engineering people about it.. :).. I suppose you have to protect your advanced stuff somehow .. :) .. Seriously - the basic engine rocks - the problems is (was) the distrib. timing - which would ground and pre ignite sitting in the garage in the dead of winter as near as I could figure.. There was a guy here who raced a Stag in the local sports car club and it did fairly respectably - once he had the Delco system transplanted from the Buick.. Not the whole engine - just the electrical bits.. That said - it did kind of explode into a rust cloud around turn four one late afternoon some years ago when it was t-boned by a Datsun - who wasn't sliding sideways through the corner..
