Subject: Re: What makes a Saab Engine so durable ?

Salutations: My 2 cents? (like anyone cares) The original 4 cylinder A series engines were designed by Triumph and apparently share mains, casts, block plugs and several other minor internals with a Stag engine.. A V8.. Which - as long as you could keep the wiring from grounding out - was a very tough little engine.. I have often thought this might explain all the bearings which - as an aside - is one of the reasons it's such a tractor off the line without a turbo.. However - I really still believe that it comes down to strict adherence to maintenance.. Particularly the timing chain and water pump.. I again mention my 403 Oldsmobile powered Motorhome which, if maintained as per schedule, will I think outlive my SAAB engine as it (even hauling 9000pds motorhome) lopes along at 70kph around 1,900 RPMs.. Given it's special application, GMC apparently balanced the pistons, rods and crank on Motorhome bound 455 and 403's (which was very odd outside of police builds in North America) and that - if I have any suggestion for folks looking to keep an engine going forever - is the answer.. Dynamically Balance the crank, rods and pistons and your motor will likely outlive you.. My owners group pals there have several million mile + owners who haven't done much other than replace the push rods and pumps and have owned them since new (it was the choice of several GMC engineers as a retirement present).. So - really it comes down to performing maintenance and careful building practices.. Some vehicles are doomed to user abuse (say a Ford Festiva) - I think that the manufacturers know this and are slightly more slack about the tolerances as a result.. I suppose that's what everyone is really worried about as GM brings the Epsilon platform to all things GM.. Anyway - it's mid point in the Christmas season - so here's Top Xmas Searches to date this year: Miss Eartha Kitt: Santa Baby http://www.dexterdyne.net/888/0025.RAM Guaraldi Budwig Bailey - Linus and Lucy http://www.dexterdyne.net/888/0010.RAM Mr. George Thorogood and the Destroyers - Rock and Roll Christmas http://www.dexterdyne.net/888/0026.RAM You can get a full list at the main site by running a search on 'xmas' or 'christmas' or simply pressing one of the HoHo buttons and listening in.
