Well, one good point is that the crankshaft has 5 main bearings, one on each end and one between each of the cylinders. This supports the crankshaft much better under load, which reduces flex. The less it flexes, the less it's going to wear the bearings. Pretty primitive, and they did in fact have severe problems with wear. 100K miles was impressive from one of those. I'd show him the high-mileage Saabs list above, and suggest that perhaps his perception of 4-cyl engines is limited to the (pathetic) offerings of US carmakers in the past. How many US-made cars have US-made 4-cyl engines in them any more, I wonder? Dave Hinz
