Not completely true. It *can* be true, but the upper mount can also crack through over time and just need replacing. Best to carefully inspect all of them when any are replaced to keep tabs. Reducing the travel of the lowers with hard rubber is a good idea as well. My '95 with 100kmi needed new uppers this fall. Both lower mounts are clean and fine so far, but the upper mount was cracked through on one and partially through on another. I replaced both with poly and probably should've only replaced one with poly and the other with the OE rubber. (Rubber aft, poly forward (on engine)). On an automatic car it would be much worse at idle than in my 5 sp. on the 'stiffeners', it is up to you. I'd replace any cracked or torn upper mounts with new as it is not that bad of a job. $0.02, KeithG > No. > > The top mount failing are a sympton that your bottom hydraulic mounts > have failed, replacing or stiffening the top mounts will only mask > the symptoms of the problem. > > Anyway, who would pay that price for a couple of peices of cut up > plastic pipe, you could make your own for a few pence. > >
