It may have depended on the order in which you disconnected. Should be neg(-) then pos(+) terminals. It's also my feeling that taking them off and not letting them bobble near the terminals causing brief reconnects and surges of power back to the system is very important. It's best to take them off and wrap them with something non-conductive to prevent this. When you've got the new battery in, reconnect pos then neg (reverse removal order). As annoying as it may seem, the alarm system may be reacting exactly as it should for the protection of the car. I've removed the battery in my '99 9-3 several times with the method outlined above without any problems. Gary Cornelisse
