Subject: Are we driving the same car?

I've started to read this particular Saab thread only last week and this post by Gary grabbed my attention, I could not believe we are driving the same car!!! 1 - IMHO the 02Aero has very little lag if any above about 1800 rpm . The boost gage goes into the red region almost instantly after flooring the accelerator furthermore the car reaction is also instantaneous. A test that I started to do with my old 84 900T16 is to run in 5th gear at 45mph in a flat empty road with good visibility, floor the accelerator and measure the time that takes to go from 50 to 70mph while cheking the boost gage. In both cars the boost goes to maximum at about 60 mph that corresponds to about 1900 rpm. The times are 7.7 seconds for the 900 and 6.5sec!!! for the Aero. If there is any turbo lag it should show in this test. This test should not be done in the lowest gears because the engine management limits the torque. If you are concerned with lag do this test with ANY normally aspirated engine of similar capacity, i.e. 2.3 liters . ====> Gary, have you reported the 2 seconds lag to your dealer? It would be interesting to know under which conditions you've measured the 2 sec. lag, AFAIK your experience is unique. 2 - Noise. I cannot say that the tyre noise is intrusive, in fact since I've got teh Aero I wonder why some Saab owners, particularly in USA are concerned with road noise. IMO the Aero is extremely quiet, in fact one of the quietest cars I've experienced (Michelin stock tyres at advised pressure). 3 - Mileage. Gary, you do not mention if you quote Imperial ot US miles. If they are US miles, I sincerely believe that you are wrong. >GAS MILEAGE. In city driving I get about 22-23mpg. I suppose that's not >unreasonable given how many short trips I make, and how often I lead-foot >it. But on road trips, holding 80mph for hours, the car only gets 28mpg. >My father's boat of a Buick easily makes over 35mpg on the road -- why >can't Saab's fancy high-tech engine do better? 22-23mpg US is about 27 mpg Imperial or 9.5 km/l This is fantastic for city driving 28 mpg US is 33.6 mpg Imperial or 11.9 km/l Seems reasonable for average 80mph in the Aero. I get about the same. A large Buick doing 35mpgUS????? . I cannot believe this R. Terlevich '84 900T16 200,000 miles '02 9-5 Aero 7,000 miles '98 Jeep G. Cherokee V8 40,000 miles A Buick doing
