Subject: Re: buy snow tires or not?

The safety >benefits with proper winter tyres/tires is worth much more than that. >Why buy one of the safest cars (a Saab) and then act like a fool by >driving around on inferior "all season" tyres/tires? > Because even here in Maine, (far northeastern corner of the US) where winter can be quite brutal, 95+% of the time the roads are bare, dry pavement. We have plenty of snow plows, and we salt the roads VERY heavily as soon as it starts snowing. Now that said, when I had rear wheel drive Volvos and Peugeots I used four snow tires in the winter - the all seasons just would not do the job. And yes, the braking performance was better in snow than on my current Golf with all-seasons. But I would say that on dry pavement, the stopping distance of my Volvo 740 was easily doubled when the snow tires (Dunlop Graspic - not cheap junk) were on. And the cornering capability was dramatically reduced as well. But without them I could not get out of my driveway.... I am just that much extra careful in snow with the Golf. The Golf is "good enough" in the snow, and vastly better on dry pavement. If the road conditions are so bad that I feel unsafe to go out in the Golf, I will stay home, but so far I have had no trouble going through even 10+ inches of unplowed snow with it. If I lived in a rural area where the roads were not so well kept, I would have snows even on the Golf. Of course all of the above won't help the idiots around here who seem to think that four wheel drive repeals the laws of physics.
