yo tom i didn't keep all the links to the sources that confirmed the = crashworthiness of the saab compared to the passat, but there's a lot of = websites that provide test data on various models. older passats didn't = fare well compared to saabs, wherever i looked. then there's the saab = site of testimonials as to the performance of saabs in accidents. = enough people walking away from near-fatal accidents convinced me that = the data was valid. (couldn't find a similar site for passats!) but the real clincher was when i first test drove the saabs i own now. = they just felt more tightly attached to the ground and more responsive = in stop/start situations than the '91 passat we had. i must say that i = was partly enamoured by the drive and partly by the stories/data. just so you know, the rear-ender took place at a traffic light. the car = that hit us was screeching to a halt, and we were forced into the car in = front. the entire rear end of the passat was pushed in and the cabin = frame was bent enough that one rear door wouldn't open. so much for = crumple zones. all that said, i've no data on recent passats. hope that's useful abdallah "tom reingold" <trn244nopsamnline.net> wrote in message = news:3E282208.4080700nopsamnline.net... | On 1/17/2003 2:41 AM:Abdallah Jamal wrote |=20 | > the family had an accident in our '91 passat a year and a half ago = (rear ended. whiplash. therapy. unsympathetic insurance company - all = the usual stuff). anyway, the wife trashed her little suzuki runabout = as well, so now we own two cheaply acquired '87 9000's - both hatchbacks = - the 9000S for her and the 9000T for me. to get to the point, both = have four 3-point safety belts and a 2-point, as has been mentioned. we = both feel immensely safe compared to what we had, and, for now, i = wouldn't buy anything else. (i've spent a lot of time researching the = performance of varioius cars in accidents and the late 80's saabs come = up stars compared to other cars that cost more...) | >=20 | > oh, and we have 3 kids, 3, 6 and 9. the little one is comfortable = in the car seat with the restraining belt attached to hooks/loops in the = trunk. | >=20 | > i agree with my fellow countryman in the east. no better value out = there than a well maintained older saab 9000.... | >=20 |=20 | Abdallah, would you please explain what the differences in the=20 | crashworthiness are between a Passat and a Saab 9000? I'm considering=20 | getting a Passat some time in the future. I think about my car = purchases=20 | years in advance, since I buy only used cars. So I pay attention to = the=20 | new crops of cars and remember what I learn until I buy. I've been=20 | driving 9000's (and 900's) since 1991. |=20 | --=20 | Tom Reingold | Noo Joizy |
